Rediscovery of Crataegus pisifera (Rosaceae: Maleae)

Las prospecciones en campo en 2021 dieron como resultado el redescubrimiento del guisante de fruto espinoso Crataegus pisifera Sarg. (C. succulenta var. pisifera (Sarg.) Kruschke), un endemismo de Vermont conocido con certeza sólo por las colecciones tipo realizadas en 1901. Las recolecciones realizadas a lo largo de la temporada de crecimiento de 2021 en la localidad tipo y en nuevas poblaciones cercanas confirman su presencia continua en el paisaje de Vermont. Se presenta una caracterización morfológica adicional y se discuten las desviaciones de la descripción original. Los frutos maduros a finales de octubre medían 7,2-11,2 mm de diámetro, 9,2 mm de media valor mayor que los frutos inmaduros descritos en la bibliografía. Por lo tanto, el diámetro de los frutos no separa a C. pisifera de las variedades de C. succulenta, estrechamente relacionadas. Presentamos una clave, el primer mapa del área de distribución y las primeras ilustraciones publicadas de esta especie perdida hace tiempo; también incluimos una lectotipificación de segundo paso que aclara cuál de los dos pliegos de herbario disponibles es el lectotipo.
